Sora is the main character of the Kingdom Hearts series and with this a character original to the game (rather than being lent from either a Disney movie or Final Fantasy game). Together with his friends Riku and Kairi he lives on Destiny Islands, another one KH-exclusive world. The isle they're actually living on is never shown in the game (except for Sora's room) and we only get to see an uninhabited small island that's so close to their homes that it can be travelled to by boat.

Apart from the aforementioned main characters, three other children use to play there: Tidus, Wakka and Selphie; all three from different Final Fantasy episodes (Tidus & Wakka from FF10, Selphie from FF8). However, they don't have very big roles and only Selphie is ever seen again after their island disappeared.

While Kairi only recently arrived on Destiny Islands, Sora and Riku were born there it seems (it's never mentioned explicitly, but you could guess it from the way the story develops - also, Riku makes a comment that before Kairi's appearance on the island, he never asked himself whether there were other worlds besides their own, so he presumably hasn't seen any other before). Nevertheless (or especially because of that), they are all very curious about the 'outside' and plan on building a raft in order to see other worlds. But, alas, on the mere day it is finished, their world vanishes (due to invasion of heartless) and they are separated from each other.

Sora will then find himself again in a town called Traverse; a world where everyone who lost his/her world seems to get stranded. He soon not only discovers that he is the wielder of the Keyblade - an exceptionally strong weapon against the heartless - but also makes friends with Goofy and Donald who are in search of their king, Mickey, who advised them to follow the keybearer. On his journey he does not only encounter lots of Disney and Final Fantasy characters along with hordes of heartless, he also learns that Riku has sided with the heartless on his quest to find Kairi, thus igniting their subliminal rivalry.

Towards the end, it is revealed that Kairi is one of the seven Princesses of Heart(s) that are necessary to open the door to Kingdom Hearts, the heart of the world(s). However, although all seven have been 'collected' by Maleficent and her evil fellows who strive to open the door in order to gain rule over all the worlds with help from the heartless and dark power, it is not possible to open the door just yet, as Kairi has lost her heart, which is a necessity in the process of opening the Door to Darkness. And, as surprising as it is, it turns out that Kairi's heart has been inside Sora all the time. Riku, who has given into darkness after his defeat by Sora and his friends, then tries to force Sora to reveal her heart with another keyblade that was created from the princesses' power.

In opposite to Sora's sword, though, it is one to open people's hearts (while Sora's would close them). After Sora triumphs over Riku (who is by that time controlled by Ansem/Xehanort) once again, he deliberately uses the dark keyblade to open his heart and reveal Kairi, who then wakes up, making the keyhole of Hollow Bastion complete, while Sora, without his heart, becomes a heartless. After a short while, he is released or 'brought back to life' by Kairi, who recognizes him despite his heartless outlook and promises to protect him from the darkness, thus causing him to find his way back from the dark and not get lost in it (he later states that he was already forgetting his past, but as he heard Kairi's voice, he was able to recover his path).

Shortly after, Sora's being captured in Castle Oblivion and the events of Chain of Memories take place (sorry, I haven't played it yet). Sora falls asleep and loses all his memories.

When he wakes up one year later, he has no idea what has happened or why he has fallen asleep; however, he has a strange feeling of familiarity when leaving Twilight Town (the location he became conscious again) and the people there in order to continue his search for Riku & Kairi, yet he has not met them before and they haven't met him either.

"Kairi: The one who was with Riku and me all the time - we played together on that island. His voice always used to be there... but now it's gone. I can't think of his face, or his name. I feel awful about it. So I told myself - I'm not going to the island until I remember everything about him."

Later on it is revealed that why he was asleep, DiZ was working on regaining his memories through Sora's nobody Roxas by putting him into a virtual Twilight Town and erasing all his original memories (about Organization XIII and so on). While those events, Kairi had forgotten about Sora as well; but, apparently, no one else she used to know (like Riku). He eventually recurs to her again later after having a dream of him and Roxas.
