Tio is one of many automata constructed during the War between Good and Evil fo fight on Valmar's side under the People of Darkness. When the events of the game take place, only two TIO models are left over; one of which is destroyed later by the party.

In the beginning, she appears to be just an AI following orders given by her "master" (in that case, Melfice). However, it seems that after you battle her there is something changed or broken/unlocked in her system so that she doesn't have to carry out her order(s) anymore.

Because mareg saves her from sure death, she adopts him as her new master. Though when she's asking him for new orders, he tells her to be(come) her own master and decide for herself what she wants to do, which leaves her puzzled.

She tries very hard to understand that order throughout the game and grasp what it means to have a human (which she actually appears to possess, although she's just a machine). This makes the conclusion possible that she has an AI that is able to learn - even how feelings work; or, merely, to have them.

Being a mere robot, she seems to have no emotions (at least in the beginning, that is) and doesn't know how they "function". As the plot progresses, she begins to understand what it means and "learns" how to feel.

After Mareg's death she notices that she has a heart - so to speak - of her own for the first time. Yet she doesn't appreciate it at first because of the negative feelings it produces. Thus, she concludes a "heart" is made for suffering. But alas, after several incidents she starts to get sick of hurt and states that her heart is not made for sorrow but happiness and that she doesn't want any other of her friends to suffer (as Mareg did) either.
