When he was small, Yamato lived together with his brother Takeru and their parents until eventually they get divorced (before that, however, both of them experience their first contact with digimon during a fight between Greymon and Parrotmon), setting apart also Matt and T.K.

While Takeru stays with his mother, Yamato comes to live with his father. This is when he and his father move from their former residence to O-Daiba.

When he's in fifth grade, he and Takeru go to a summer camp for vacation where they first come in contact with the digital world. During this time, they have to fight several villains in order to - surprise - save the (digi)world.

Three years later, when Yamato is fourteen and has graduated to eigth grade in high school, the new digidestined are chosen, to which his brother belongs as well. Yamato, however, has his own band by now, the Teenage Wolves, who are pretty successful/popular at his school, casuing him to have a wide range of fangirls/"groupies".

Since he isn't too preoccupied with being a digidestined anymore, he gets into a relationship with his ex-digidestined friend Sora Takenouchi. 25 years later, after their last adventure has been overcome, he becomes an astronaut (like... yeah, right) and marries Sora, having two children with her.

Note: As I haven't seen any of the Digimon movies up until now, I can't say much about them, except for that he appears in the first one which takes place between the first and second season. If I'll ever get the chance to see one of them, I'll expand this section. Sorry for the inconvenience.
