comparison

Here I'll deal with some other characters from anime/manga and videogames that, in my opinion, have analogies to Yamato in some way (may it be physically or psychically).

I will try to keep this rather reasonable and not too far-fetched, though of course - as those comparisons only reflect my point of view - it will remain fairly opinionated.

Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII); Barring their optical affinities, Cloud also has a similar character to Yamato (on a different level, of course - Cloud's a lot older than Yamato and FF7's storyline is also much more complex). He's a very introverted person who seems like a "cool guy" in the beginning, but it is later revealed that he is quite different from how he seems at first.

That apart, they're also leading kind of types (although Yamato is not the leader of the digidestined); however, Cloud is obviously not as short-tempered as Matt and even more confused about his personality (after all, Digimon is a kid's show while FF7 is quite intricate).

Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto); I actually think that, apart from their differing looks, they have quite a lot in common. For one thing Sasuke also depicts the "cool guy" (who the girls fall for - haha), and although he might not be a hot-head you better not enrage him nonetheless.

Another thing is that he, too, has the role of the rival of the main character (who is lured by evil at some point) as does Yamato. Oh, and he had a hard childhood as well, lol.

Riku (Kingdom Hearts); Another one of those "rival" types, Riku gets jealous easily and doesn't trust others a lot. For example he thinks Sora betrays him when he watches him having fun with Goofy & Donald.

Furthermore he's easily manipulated by Maleficent and Ansem, whereas Yamato is influenced by Cherrymon into thinking that Taichi was his rival he had to defeat.

As a sidenote, I didn't find Riku especially reminding of Yamato; however, I think the remaining cast of characters has a lot of similarities with Digimon characters - for example, Sora and Taichi look quite akin, whilst Kairi was fairly evocative of Hikari (even their names sound similar; especially when you take Hikari's american nickname, Kari).

Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII); Compared to the other characters mentioned, I think Squall doesn't have as much in common with Matt as them. But, as he wouldn't be here otherwise, there are some likenesses as well.

For instance he appears rather cold/cool and is not too fond of other people (although he later has a relationship *cough*). Besides he also acts calm and collected and more or less "mature" (well, he is) in contradicition to some of the other characters in FF8.

Anyway, he doesn't seem to be too prone to fits of rage as Yamato has them occasionally (mainly when it comes to arguments with Tai).

Ryudo (Grandia 2); Again a character who's rather collected and acts "cool" towards others, but can be annoyed easily by dumbness. He's also pretty strong and has a leader attitude 8after all, he is a leader).

As is stated in the game, Ryudo is - except for his hawk/falcon (?) Skye - more of a loner, not only because he's supposed to be as a geohound (who don't seem to be too popular among the people).

Kotarou Higuchi (Pita Ten); Another, errm, pretty far-fetched one (didn't I say I wanna avoid this?)... I think, if at all, they're only to some extent alike in the beginning of the series. Kotaro is rather calm, too, and annoyed by Misha's stupidity. He's used to being alone due to his father's usually at work, so he has to care for himself.

His mother dies when he was very young while Yamato was departed from his at a very young age as wlel (although she didn't die).

Akiho Kudou (Angel/Dust); Although she is a "villain", I do think they have pretty much in common. Firstly, Akiho is Yuina's rival in a way (at least from her point of view) and she wants to prove that she's "better" than her. For this, she uses Lucifer - similar to Yamato using Gabumon in order to defeat Taichi.

Secondly, she has little self-confidence/self-esteem and needs to push it with her "new, pretty self" that she gains through the contract with Lucifer.

Daisuke Motomiya (Digimon 02); That one is only here as to the fact he's Yamato's successor in bearing the crest of friendship. I actually don't think they have lots of mutualities, since Daisuke merely resembles Taichi but Yamato. The only thing they might have in common is their outspoken-ness and that Davis is, as well, quite a hot-head.

But that aside, Daisuke acts much more childish than Matt ever did and can appear quite dumb, too.
