love?
Okay, we all know that Yamato marries Sora at the end of season two and that they also have a relationship
during the second part of it. So apparently I will hold forth about this a little. But besides that, I'll also examine
other popular couplings (and only them, as most others are painfully ridiculous) and state my opinion about them.
Sora Takenouchi; The officially proposed pairing, often referred to as "sorato" or "yamara".
Before saying what I think about it, let's look on the relationship as such, for it is actually present throughout the
series: While in the first season they don't particularly care for each other, it is Sora who firtsly shows deeper
interest for Yamato in season two.
At first she hesitates, but after being encouraged by Taichi (omg, drama!) they're subsequently only seen holding hands,
with his hands on her shoulders or at least standing very close to each other (in Japan, that is a definite proof of a
relationship!).
However, as they're not main characters anymore there's not much more told about their relationship, except for their
marriage in the end.
As for me, I'm not really a fan/supporter of sorato. Not mainly because I regard another pairing to be "better", "more
realistic" or anything, but just because Sora & Yamato gives me the impression of being somewhat forced. Moreover I
don't think they fit together all too good. But maybe I'm just too much into the first season, where it definitely wouldn't
work out at all.
My main criticism/scepticalness about sorato is that their characters practically don't fit. While he is the "rebel"
(cliché-wise), she is the "mother" (did I ever mention that you can perfectly peg the digidestined as those "types"?).
And as we all know, rebels are not only rebellious in general, they're also especially rebellious to grown-ups (i.e.
[their] parents).
But apart from pigeonholes their characters don't really seem to work out. In season one Sora might be somewhat of a
"tomboy", yet she is usually caring a lot about the others loading herself with liability. Furthermore her "I have to care
for everyone"-attitude also leads to her patronising, which is something Yamato - ironically, as he does it himself with
his brother - cannot stand at all.
Now in the second season, we have a very different Sora. She's not as "boyish" anymore (if she ever was) and even quit
playing soccer (trading it in for tennis though). If you asked me, I'd say she's pretty girlish here. She acts a lot more
shy, quiet & obsequoius than before (although she was on of the quieter ones back then already). I suppose that's not
really the "right" type girlfriend for Yamato. But that's only my opinion.
Taichi Yagami; Probably the most popular coupling, "taito" or - less used - "yamachi" denotes the
relationship between Yamato and Taichi. As I already wrote in the relationships section, their former rivalry evolves into
a very good friendship, which is always a good base for a love relationship (in my opinion).
Anyway, since they're still very young in the first season, I don't really see any romance/love here at all, and in season
two Yamato's nearly already hooked up to Sora. But for the imaginative part, I think they'd match up pretty good due to
their strong friendship (although one might argue that they fight a lot - yet in my opinion that is a part of their
growing process as well; they're not really "rivals" if you ask me, although they might act like this sometimes).
What is interesting about this are the differences in their characters. Opinions diverge about that one - some interpret
it as "romantic tension" (though I don't) and some see it as pure rivalry (what I don't support either). At any rate, this
might evolve partly from Yamato's need for attention - since he's the usual "loner" who follows his own way, he doesn't
have a lot of people supporting and encouraging him (besides Gabumon), therefore he feels needless easily (as for example
when Takeru's growing up and he loses his reason for action).
Opposedly, Taichi is naturally drawing a lot of attention towards him, not only because he's the leader but because of his
behaviour in general. Matt might on one hand not like it as it is attention-attracting and annoying as well, but also for he
might feel a little left behind.
Okay, so what I was aiming at is that it could work out, yet there's no real, uhm, "proof" (when thinking about it seriously
[what nobody does, of course], there's not really a lot of evidence for ANY of the couples proposed, is there?). Except for
that it's my personal favourite of course, lol.
Mimi Tachikawa; ...HAHA! You don't want me to get serious on that one, do you? As one
person
beautifully explained it: "Matt and Mimi have barely spoken a direct word to each other? They must be trying to hide their
feelings!"
Apparently, they don't seem to interact a lot - neither in season one nor in season two. That said, I don't see much of a
relationship here, although it is - seen from a systematic point of view - a nice picture to have Taichi & Sora and
Yamato & Mimi paired up (and - of course - Takeru & Hikari, too). But apart from that... uhm, I guess I've made
myself clear enough by now.
Hikari Yagami; A-hum. This is not such a popular pairing as the ones above; however, I've seen
some websites about it. In fact the only scene I remember in which Yamato and Hikari actually interact is when he has to
look after her (...hint, hint) and she ends up in tears because he said something discomforting to her.
I guess that kind of says it all - to my mind there's not a great chance of a relationship here. Period.
Jun Motomiya; Okay, so that's obviously more of a joke... she's got a crush ony him in season two,
as he's the singer of a famous teen band etc. pp., but he's not really into her. Ahem. Euphemistically expressed.
